BOTULINUM TOXIN (BOTOX®)

Facial rejuvenation by injection with botulinum toxin inhibits the action of the muscles that create certain expression lines through a process called denervation.

Botulinum toxin is a purified therapeutic agent used for facial rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction and softening of:
» Frown lines, the horizontal crease or vertical wrinkles that develop between the eyebrows
» Forehead furrows or creases that extend horizontally across the forehead
» Crow’s feet or wrinkles that develop in the outer areas around the eyes
» Cords in the neck (platysmal bands)

Without its excessive contraction, the muscle relaxes along with the skin, softening or preventing the appearance of wrinkles. The injection is applied into the forehead and the lateral portions of the eyes. It can also be injected into the neck decreasing the platysmal bands.

Reported risks associated with botulinum toxin therapy include headache, nausea or flu-like symptoms, respiratory infection and eyelid or eyebrow droop. All of these are reported to be relatively uncommon and temporary in duration. Occasionally there can be equimosis but there is need for bed-rest and the patient can retake his/her daily activities immediately.

The paralyzing action on the muscle approximately lasts within 3 to 6 months. This period of time varies among patients and the effect can endure more. Follow-up will be required to maintain the result of wrinkles reduction therapy.
